Written while at Actional, this article analyzed the architectural limitations of enterprise application integration middleware and introduced control broker technology as a solution for real-time front-to-back-end integration. Published in April 2001 — at the commercial internet's inflection point, before the SaaS era had a name. The systems thinking in this article is a direct ancestor of the constraint-first philosophy at the center of the Context Architect framework.
